Liz Willock ordered an Uber while in Philadelphia, and got chatting with her driver, Ellis Hill.
He told her that his son, Darrell Hill, had qualified for the Olympics and would be representing the USA in shot put – however, he didn’t have the money to fly to Rio to see him in action.
Here’s this wonderful man who has a close relationship with his son and I know any parent would want to see their son or daughter compete at the Olympics, but it was very understandable how that could be out of reach.
Willock resolved then and there to try and get Hill to Rio. The pair exchanged information, and Willock set up a GoFundMe page to raise $7500 for the ticket.
In just two days, the campaign had reached its target – as of today, Willock has raised $8200, and Hill is “ecstatic”:
I haven’t seen my son in a couple of months because he’s been training. I can’t wait to see him and encourage him in person and let him know I’m 100% in his corner.

Liz Willock ordered an Uber while in Philadelphia, and got chatting with her driver, Ellis Hill.

Speaking to People magazine, Willock said his revelation was “devastating”:
